The Listening Bay with Afrique Like Me at Fort York

Journey through a living archive of African Music, Memory and Migration. "The Listening Bay", produced by Afrique Like Me, is a self-guided immersive sonic exhibition inviting visitors to listen across regions, tracing how music is continually shaped through exchange, resilience, and innovation. Beginning in West Africa and moving through East, Central, North, and Southern Africa, the featured genres reveal a continent defined not by a single musical identity, but by centuries of movement, encounter, and creative transformation. The journey continues beyond the continent, following the movement of people and music across the Atlantic and into Canada. Some of these journeys were marked by the violence of enslavement, while others followed migration, education, labour, and the search for freedom. As African-rooted musical practices encountered new places and experiences, they continued to evolve. Together, these listening expereinces invite us to hear African music as a living force
